Introduction
Colleen Hoover is currently one of the most popular authors among the younger generations because of her books about romance and tragedy. After hearing so many mixed opinions about her, I decided to give one of her books a shot. In this review, I will be discussing what I liked and disliked about her book "Ugly Love". Personally, I did not enjoy the book very much, I think the writing was rough and the author's ability to tell the story was poor. Despite that, I still cried to the ending and there were some moments that I thoroughly enjoyed. Colleen struck the hearts of many romance lovers, but certainly not mine. Now, I'll start this review by talking about the characters.
The Characters
Ugly Love has two main characters, Tate the female lead, and Miles the male lead. Something I find to be very important when it comes to writing books is creating relatable characters. Personally, I couldn't relate to the characters at all. Tate is a strong-headed and bold woman that cares for others. Miles is a reserved and shy guy who tends to only look out for himself. I think that when they met, their personalities changed way too much. Miles went from being a closed-off introvert to being super emotional and protective almost instantly. I also found the dynamic between the two frustrating, it was a constant back and forth the entire story and it just got old. Miles's character was very poorly written in my opinion, he never stuck to one personality. I felt as though in every chapter he was a different person, which also made it difficult to like him. The characters just really did not do it for me in this book and I feel like there was a lot of wasted potential.
The Writing
I'll try to say this in the nicest way possible, but when I read Ugly Love, I thought I was reading a high schooler's fanfiction. Nothing about her writing stood out to me, other than the fact that it was extremely mediocre. One of my biggest pet peeves while reading was every. single. time. Miles walked into a room his arms were folded across his chest, and he was leaning on a door frame. Was there no other way Miles could walk into a room? Is that as descriptive as you can get? And don't even get me started on the chapters. When revealing the backstory of a character you have to do it correctly for the full impact of their trauma to hit the reader. When reading miles' backstory every other chapter I was severely disappointed. If Miles would've told her about it when he finally confronted his demons, it would hit a lot harder. Overall, I was not satisfied with how this book was written and I'm hoping her book "It Ends With Us" turns out to be better than this,
Conclusion
Instead of whining about the predictable plot and complete lack of engaging content, I'll go ahead and conclude this review by saying I think it could've been better. There are lots of ways to write a romance, and Ugly Love was one of the most basic romance plots of all time and there were no twists or turns to keep you engaged. Of course, I read the entirety of the book so I could display my own opinions, but I just really did not enjoy the telling of the story. With that being said, I will read two more of her books just to see if it gets any better. Thank you for reading, please feel free to contact me with your own opinions on the book.
