Daisy Jones & The Six is easily one of the best books I've read. Its uniqueness, the complex layers, and the way the story is told pull this novel together and create what I would even call a masterpiece. I rated this book five stars on GoodReads because of how unbelievably entertaining it was to read. This story is written like an interview, at first it was difficult to remember who was who and what everyone did but I don't think this book should've been written any other way. after the story is concluded, Taylor Jenkins Read, the author, added an interview she did with Random House Reader's Circle where she talks about the difficulty of writing a novel like an interview for the first time which really makes me appreciate the book so much more. Now, I'll explain why I loved this novel so much.
The Story
Daisy Jones & The Six is about a band named, you guessed it, Daisy Jones & The Six. The novel is about Daisy, a rich girl from L.A. who is neglected growing up leading her to sneak into bars, sleep with rockstars, and sing at the Whisky a Go Go. She gets discovered around the same time as a band who calls themselves "The Six". The Six consists of Billy their singer, Karen on the keys, Warren on the drums, Graham on guitar, and Pete and Eddie on bass. They cross paths when their producer decides it would be a good idea for the group to collab for a song. They create "Honeycomb" and finally get the recognition they deserve. After their song blows up, they decide to join and create music together. We learn what really happened between all the members through the stories of each member. I am a sucker for books with more than one perspective and Daisy Jones & The Six perfected it. The story is filled with so many layers that make discussions about the book so complex and interesting. I was laughing, then crying, then rejoicing, to say the least this novel is a roller coaster of emotions but I don't think I will ever read a book as unique as this one.
The Characters
I could talk about the characters for hours. I have never read a book where the author was able to write people who were all so different so well. By the end of my read through I was completely convinced that the members of The Six were real people that lived and thrived in the sixtes and seventies. Daisy, Karen, and Warren take the top 3 for my favorite characters because of how well their personalities were portrayed. Everyone in the band had their own problems, struggles, or addictions that they fought with constantly and reading about how they cope or how they persevere was so inspiring. Eddie was a dick, but he was a dick for the right reasons. Taylor wrote tension between Eddie and Billy's relationship so perfectly, we aren't supposed to like Eddie because we like Billy. Although some people hate Billy, he cheated on his wife and missed his owns daughters birth, he's also self absorbed and egotistical which causes even more friction between the band members. It took me two days to finish this book and only one to reread it a week later. I was drawn in by each of the characters and will be reading it again just because I miss them. I have never seen characters written this well before, but if you know of any books with amazing characters please feel free to give me some recommendations!
Conclude
Daisy Jones & The Six is one of the best books I've ever read. I don't mean to hype it up too much but it truly changed how I view novels and even my perspective on life. I would strongly encourage anyone to read this book, anyone can relate to at least one of these characters in one way or another which makes it even better. Taylor Jenkins Reid did a phenomenal job with Daisy Jones & The Six and I plan to read more of what she has to offer.
