Mom Jeans "Sweet Tooth" Album Review

Who are Mom Jeans?

Mom Jeans is a band for all the lovers of alternative/midwest emo music. They started with just the guitarist Austin Carango and singer Eric Butler in 2014. Over the years a few new members joined making the band what it is today, Bart Thompsom, on guitar, and Sam Kless on bass. The band released their first full-length album in 2016, and the same year signed with Counter Intuitive Records. By 2022, Mom Jeans has released three albums and six singles and EPs. They have won over the hearts of people that enjoy the midwest emo scene and continue to make music that everyone can connect with.

Sweet Tooth Album

On February 25th, 2022, Mom Jeans released their newest album, Sweet Tooth, which contains thirteen different songs and has a run time of 37 minutes. After listening to this album on repeat for the past week, I am going to review my favorite songs off of this album based on pure enjoyment, starting with Luv L8r.

Luv L8r

A song that has not left my head since I heard it for the first time two weeks ago. Luv L8r is a song that I can dance to, cry to, and play my air guitar to. This song blew me away and very easily became a song that I highly recommend to others. The first half of verse one is rather sad, lyrics-wise as well as instrumentally, while the second half is much faster and more upbeat. The pre-chorus is perfect for sing-a-longs, every time I hear the pre-chorus I cannot help but get up sing, and dance to the catchy lyrics. But then the chorus hits, and you sit back down, tears start falling from your eyes, and life is over. This song is for the heartbroken and the heartbreakers, which is very clear from the beginning. The bridge is very interesting, Eric goes on a tangent using big, scientific words that makes you forget your listening to a song and not Sheldon from "Big Bang Theory". This leads us into bridge two, which slows down the song once more and all of the feels come rushing back at once. Although this song is barely three minutes, you can experience every emotion in the book, which is what I believe makes it so special.

What's Up?

Though "What's Up" was released months before the whole album dropped, it still remains in my top three songs. What draws me and many others into this song is how relatable the lyrics are, I don't think I've ever listened to a song that could encapsulate my emotions so perfectly. The first verse of the song goes at a rather normal pace until the bridge between the first and second verses when it rapidly speeds up. This makes the second verse a lot more fun to listen to and creates an opportunity for the pre-chorus to be even better. The pre-chorus is my favorite part of the song, it slows down and allows us to feel the lyrics with massive amounts of emotion. "And I'm, Not sure why nothing makes me feel like getting out of bed, and I'm not sure what's going wrong inside my head." These lyrics embody a struggle that almost everyone can relate to which makes the song so much more impactful. Moving into the chorus the song speeds up again creating a lighter mood and a tune anyone would get up and dance to. The song finishes using the same structure as the first half which ties it all together and leaves you feeling like every burden has been lifted off of your heavy shoulders.

White Trash Millionaire

I feel as though Mom Jeans has shown their love for this song in many ways, like getting the title tattooed on Eric Butler's lower back and creating a music video for it. I had high expectations for this song going in and it did not disappoint. In the intro, we can hear an acoustic guitar playing behind the vocals which quickly transitions into guitar and bass during the first verse. After the second verse, we immediately hear the chorus, which is unbelievably catchy. During the lyric "So now I'm staying up and sleeping in While wondering if we'll ever speak again..." Eric's voice brings the whole song together, I'm not sure why but this one part of the song just will not get out of my head. The second chorus begins right after the bridge and it is just as gripping as the first. It starts with "So as the months get colder, I'm less sober," Which is another lyric that resides in my head. After an instrumental break and chorus number three, we get the outro "I'll see your face." This just wraps up every lyric sung so far and completes the song.

Sugar Rush

This song became one of my favorites off the album after just one listen. The lyrics are relatable, It's fun to sing along to, and It's extremely catchy. Throughout the song, there is a consistent clapping in the background that eases you into it, It feels very interactive. Verses one and two have lyrics that draw you into the song like "I tried so hard to listen, but this day just will not fu****g end." During the pre-chorus you can hear the music building, this creates more intensity. In the few seconds between the pre-chorus and the chorus, you can let your emotions take over and belt the rest of the song with tears streaming down your cheeks or a huge grin stretching across your face. After the chorus, we have an instrumental break where the trumpet, drums, and bass just finish off the song beautifully.

Graduating Life

Graduating life came out one month earlier than the full release of this album and is one of the sadder songs. Despite the fact that this song only has one verse and an outro, It's still extremely relatable. It begins with an acoustic guitar just like "White Trash Millionaire," except this is used throughout the song's entirety Eric's voice sets the tone for this song very early on, It's supposed to be sad. After the first half of the verse, the lyrics "You were my shining light, Hate it when we fight," just rip your heart out and step on it. Following those lyrics, "It's getting too hard to pretend like you care, That you were my stars and moon, Everything ends too soon," ends the verse and begins a build. After we hear the trumpet, the outro begins with "The future seemed so bright, But you just can't wait to graduate life," This is my favorite outro off of the whole album. It finishes the song by signifying that It's okay to move on. If I could, I would give this song a big hug and kiss for being so perfect.

Wrapping up

This album easily became one of my favorites immediately after Its release. Though it may be short, it is still wonderful. The lyrics reside with people who are going through heartbreaks, just can't seem to get out of bed, and those who just think the songs are catchy. I know there are thirteen songs, but it would take a very long time to share my feelings about all of them. I have only been listening to Mom Jeans for about a year now but their music has impacted me in ways no other band ever could. And with that, thank you for reading, and please check out my other posts.
